Rupertsland Institute Signs Partnership with Alberta Health Services

EDMONTON – A partnership between Alberta Health Services (AHS) and Rupertsland Institute, Métis Centre of Excellence, will create new training and employment opportunities for Métis students studying a health-related field. The agreement was signed today by Dr. Chris Eagle, President and CEO and Alberta Health Services, and Tracy Friedel, Chair of the Rupertsland Institute Board of Directors.

“We’re hoping to inspire Métis students to explore the range of job possibilities available in health care, particularly at Alberta Health Services,” says Dr. Eagle. “We know having a diversified team provides new perspectives to better understand and serve our patients.”

In addition, the agreement commits the organizations to the recruitment and retention of Métis people. It reflects and fosters fairness, inclusiveness, respect and honour for diverse traditions and perspectives.

“Over many generations in western Canada, Métis people have made it a priority to maintain their health as part of ensuring the collective well-being of their communities,” says Friedel. “That’s why the partnership between Alberta’s Métis, through the Rupertsland Institute, and Alberta Health Services, is profoundly important.”

Today’s announcement will build upon successful programs like the Métis Health Science Transition Program, which provides education and mentorship opportunities for Métis youth between the ages of 18 and 30. Helping Métis students successfully transition into a career in the health sciences is one of the Rupertsland Institute’s key goals.

“Through every partnership, whether it’s with government or with the private sector, the Rupertsland Institute is meeting the needs of Métis people as evidenced by the increasing number of members who are fairly represented in the Alberta economy,” says Audrey Poitras, President of the Métis Nation of Alberta.

Alberta Health Services is the provincial health authority responsible for planning and delivering health supports and services for more than 3.7 million adults and children living in Alberta. It’s committed to attracting, engaging and developing a diverse and inclusive workforce.

The Rupertsland Institute is an affiliate of the Métis Nation of Alberta. Its mandate is to facilitate services to assist Alberta Métis in securing and retaining employment.
