Dr. Tracy L. Friedel Steps Down From Rupertsland Institute Board of Governors
Edmonton, AB, January 29, 2013 – The Rupertsland Institute Métis Centre of Excellence announced today that Dr. Tracy L. Friedel, PhD, Chair of the Rupertsland Institute Board of Governors, has resigned from her position for both personal and professional reasons.
Dr. Friedel has served on the Rupertsland Institute Board of Governors since October 2010, and became the Secretary of the Board immediately following her appointment. In February 2012, she accepted the position of Chair for the Rupertsland Institute with "deep humility, profound pride, and a great sense of duty."
During her tenure, Rupertsland Institute signed a partnership with Alberta Health Services with the aim of creating new training and employment opportunities for Métis students in health-related fields. Additionally, under her leadership, lifetime endowments were established at two post-secondary institutions including the University of Calgary and the University of Lethbridge, ensuring Métis students at those institutions have access to supports furthering their education.
Dr. Friedel's last day with the Rupertsland Institute was January 24, 2013. She will be replaced by the Vice-Chair Dr. Herb Belcourt on an interim basis until such time a new Chair has been appointed. As a current board member, and past interim Chair, Dr. Belcourt is very familiar with the goals and objectives of the Rupertsland Institute, and looks forward to continuing the work initiated by Dr. Friedel on organizational governance.
