The Role

Position Status: Permanent, Full Time (40 hours/week)

Rupertsland Institute (RLI) is an affiliate of the Métis Nation of Alberta and has a triple mandate in education, training, and research. With a decentralized network of 11 employment services centres, in addition to two mobile service units, RLI designs and delivers training and education services to more than 140,000 Alberta Métis.

The Opportunity 

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Senior Director of Operations (SDO) will train under the current SDO for a minimum of six months from the date of hire. The position carries authority and management responsibility for Rupertsland Institute (RLI) operations such as the RLI annual work-plan, annual operational plans to Government; the position assumes the lead on reporting activities related to RLI quarterly and annual work-plans. The SDO supervises members of the RLI Senior Team Services (STS) and assists the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) in strategic planning processes, business plan development and other aspects of RLI Governance as needed.  In addition, the SDO participates in negotiations related to the development and renewal of various federal and provincial agreements.  While in training, the incoming SDO will work with the RLI Executive Team Services (ETS).

Responsibilities

The position holds broad management responsibilities for RLI operations, interacting with federal and provincial government and Métis Nation of Alberta officials, and other stakeholders including post-secondary institutions. As a senior member of the RLI administration, the SDO assumes responsibilities to ensure that RLI is in full compliance with federal and provincial agreements and when called upon acts as a negotiator and interlocutor of Métis interests.

The SDO mentors and provide guidance to departmental heads, conducts annual performance evaluations, and supports the development of the RLI expenditures and annual work plan. Working closely with the Director – Human Resources, ensures strategic human resource plans and annual capacity building plans are in place.

Concomitant with the RLI goals of transparency and accountability, the SDO monitors expenditures and ensures compliance with RLI fiscal and operational plans. In addition, the SDO conducts environmental scans and relates adverse risks and impacts to the CEO. Please note, this position requires extensive travel in Alberta and Canada.

Working Knowledge

The SDO has a good understanding of management, organizational theory, and a superior understanding of the Métis Nation of Alberta governmental structure. The incumbent must be respectful of Métis protocols and cultural sensitivities and must possess an excellent understanding of government/Indigenous relations and dynamics of policy development.

Further, the SDO requires knowledge of pertinent provincial and federal legislation related to RLI services, and an enhanced understanding of the socio-cultural impacts of Métis demographics in its effects on Métis employment and educational attainment.

Qualifications

  • A post-secondary degree in business, management, public administration, or related field.
  • A minimum of five-years of experience with demonstrated leadership, and sound management practice in corporate services including finance, accounting, human resources, IT, communications, marketing, and reporting.
  • A minimum of two-years of senior leadership experience with an Indigenous organization.
