Major Gift Announcement for Métis Students at Northern Lakes College

GIFT WILL HELP CREATE ENDOWMENT FUND FOR MÉTIS STUDENTS

Slave Lake, AB (September 7, 2018) — Today, the Rupertsland Institute and the Métis Education Foundation have announced a significant gift to support Métis student success at Northern Lakes College. In 2015, the Métis Nation of Alberta and its affiliates – the Métis Education Foundation and Rupertsland Institute – in partnership with Northern Lakes College, created a $200,000 Special Purpose Fund. Mandated to disburse Métis student awards and bursaries, the interest and principal will be spent in 15 years, ending in the year 2030. This was our initial investment in the future of Métis students attending Northern Lakes College.

“Today, I am happy to announce and celebrate yet another milestone,” said President of the Métis Nation of Alberta, Audrey Poitras. “The Métis Nation of Alberta and its affiliates, in partnership with Northern Lakes College, have reached an agreement to create a $375,000 endowment in perpetuity. In making this announcement, I am aware that this contribution on behalf of future generations of Métis citizens could not be possible without the relationships and partnerships that we have created with the Métis community and stakeholders across the province.”

“Removing barriers to education is a cornerstone of the Northern Lakes College vision. Scholarships and bursaries help remove financial barriers for students, allowing them to focus on academic excellence, achieving their education goals and improving their lives. Northern Lakes College is grateful to the Rupertsland Institute for its generosity and confidence in our institution,” said Ann Everatt, President and CEO of Northern Lakes College. “Northern Lakes College is pleased to house the Rupertsland Institute at the Slave Lake Campus, providing a wide array of services to our Métis students.”
