First Year Apprentice Electrician (Entry Level – Voyageur Trades Program)
The Role
Position Summary
The Apprentice Electrician supports Journeyperson Electricians in installing, repairing, and maintaining electrical systems as part of the Voyageur Trades Program. This entry-level role focuses on developing essential electrical competencies through supervised work, in-house training, and community service projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with wiring, conduit installation, fixture mounting, panel work, and troubleshooting basic electrical issues.
- Support reading and interpreting basic electrical diagrams and code requirements.
- Participate in in-house electrical fundamentals training through Voyageur Trades.
- Complete general labour duties including material handling, prep work, cleanup, and tool maintenance.
- Follow all electrical safety standards and program safety protocols.
- Contribute labour to community-focused electrical projects as assigned.
- Track daily work hours, tasks, and skill development toward apprenticeship competency.
- Work effectively and respectfully in a team environment, supporting a positive learning culture.
To Fit the Role
Qualifications
- Must meet the minimum requirements to apprentice as an electrician, according to Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training, which includes but is not limited to:
- English 20-2
- Math 20-3
- Science 10, OR
- A pass mark in all 5 Canadian General Educational Development (GED) or Canadian Adult Education Credential (CAEC) tests, or a combination of both GED and CAEC which comprise all 5 subjects
- Ability to follow direction, work safely, and understand basic electrical concepts (training provided).
- Physical ability to perform lifting, climbing, kneeling, and repetitive tasks.
- Valid Class 5 driver’s licence and clean Driver’s Abstract (required).
- No prior electrical experience required; mechanical or technical interest is an asset.
- Strong teamwork, communication, and willingness to learn.
- Commitment to teamwork and respectful engagement in Métis community projects.
Training & Development
- Mentorship from certified Journeyperson Electricians.
- Voyageur Trades structured in-house electrical learning modules.
- Safety certifications provided as required.
- Hour/competency tracking aligned with Alberta Apprenticeship requirements.
Work Environment
- Shop environments, mobile units, community sites, and RLI facilities.
- Travel required; work may occur in varied indoor/outdoor conditions.
