Marketing and Communications Manager
The Role
Position Status: Full Time (40 hours/week), 1 Year Contract with Possibility of Becoming Permanent

Rupertsland Institute (RLI) is an affiliate of the Métis Nation of Alberta and has a triple mandate in education, training, and research. With a decentralized network of 10 METI-Service Centres, a Corporate Head Office in Edmonton, and two mobile service units; RLI designs and delivers training and education services to more than 140,000 Alberta Métis.

The Opportunity
Rupertsland Institute (RLI) is looking for a Marketing and Communications Manager. Reporting to the Senior Director of Finance and Corporate Services (SD F&CS), and in the absence of, reporting to the Senior Executive Officer (SEO), the Marketing and Communications Manager will work closely with the Senior Management Team (SMT), and consulting firms as needed, to implement marketing plans and strategic communications. The Marketing and Communications Manager will be responsible for preparing and implementing communication initiatives for RLI, including a variety of media-based advertising campaigns, newsletters and other published material. The Marketing and Communications Manager will also be responsible for leading the creative development, writing, and editing of various documents, leading and managing RLI’s website and social media, and overseeing media relations.
To Fit the Role
Responsibilities:
- Develop an annual communication and marketing plan within the assigned budget for approval by the SMT. Report quarterly progress to SD F&CS.
- Lead the creative development, writing, proofreading and editing of various documents including business plans, annual reports, key briefing materials, speeches and presentations, press releases, etc.
- Coordinate and manage the development and production of communication materials for internal and external use.
- Identify appropriate communication materials based on audience and goals. Ensure consistency in messaging on all communication platforms.
- Oversee media relations, including writing and distributing news releases, responding to media inquiries as directed, and maintaining a media kit.
- Provide presentation and graphic design services to create advertisements and other public relations materials for print and other media.
- Coordinate photography, design, film and printing for production.
- Lead, manage, and maintain RLI website and social media advancement; regularly monitor to update materials as required; ensure pertinent, accurate, and current information is available; ensure website, social media, and materials meet the RLI policy and procedure standards for communications.
- Oversee the creation and posting of approved social media messages and monitoring of social media accounts. Report on statistics for social media usage.
- Respond to requests for advertising campaigns in a timely manner by selecting the most effective media for reaching a targeted audience.
- Ensure all marketing adheres to RLI’s brand standards, guidelines and overall strategic objectives.
- Gain brand recognition for RLI services through strategic and consistent communication with stakeholders and potential stakeholders.
- Coordination of contractors as appropriate.
- Manage the marketing and communications budget.
- Assist with special events, brochure distribution and related marketing activities.
- In collaboration with the SMT, lead RLI’s rebrand, including developing plans, brand strategy, and communications policies and procedures; creating a social media strategy and brand book; and leading RLI website redevelopment and launch plan.
- Participate in recruitment activities for the Marketing and Communications team, including interviewing and onboarding new team members.
- Provide effective leadership to the Marketing and Communications team, including, assigning work, training, coaching, and conducting performance reviews.
- Willingness and ability to work evening and weekends, and travel, as required.
- Willingness and ability to attend RLI events.
- Participate in department activities and professional development.
- Other duties required.
Education and Experience:
- Post-Secondary Degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, or a related field.
- Minimum 5 years’ progressive experience in a similar Communications role.
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in overseeing and leading a team of contractors and direct reports, including those working remotely.
- Experience working with an Indigenous or not-for-profit organization is an asset.
- Experience in internal and external communications and PR media.
- Extensive knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of oral and written communications and interpersonal relation skills to determine the most effective promotional materials.
- Considerable experience and skill in graphic design, and knowledge of desktop publishing for in-house graphics design and production.
- Solid working knowledge with social media and web technologies.

- Sound expertise in writing, messaging, managing and framing communication for diverse audiences.
- Ability to effectively translate internal corporate messages and directives into engaging marketing messages focused for public consumption.
- Excellent project management skills with a solid ability to develop multi-functional plans and organize and prioritize according to the work plan.
- Strong organizational, time management, problem solving and analytical skills.
- Strong sense of ethics and the ability to handle sensitive and private information with tact and discretion.
- Ability to work effectively in a demanding, fast-paced, complex environment.
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment, taking direction from, collaborating with, and providing leadership to numerous cross-functional groups.
- Strong leadership skills with ability to coach, train, motivate, lead, and develop a team.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to establish positive ongoing media and publishing sector relationships.
