Métis Memories of Residential Schools — A Testament to the Strength of the Métis

Breaking Family Bonds

Tile #18 Breaking Family Bonds

Teaching Statement:

Indigenous families, including Métis, were threatened with imprisonment if they tried to keep their children at home and away from residential schools. Others were denied schooling of any sort. .Many children did not return home from residential schools because they either died there or became distanced from their communities.

Reflective Questions

What are some of the intergenerational impacts of residential school survivors?

If you were raised in a residential school, how do you think you would learn how to be a parent? What would you have learned about parenting in residential school?

If, year after year, you were isolated from your family, how would you learn to be part of a family?
