Métis Memories of Residential Schools — A Testament to the Strength of the Métis

Keeping Watch

Tile #19 Keeping Watch

Teaching Statement:

Children in residential schools often suffered extreme forms of abuse, including physical, emotional, sexual, and spiritual abuse. Older children often took on the role of caretakers and parents watching out over their younger siblings and friends. Many adult family members would be reluctant to hear these harsh truths.

Reflective Questions:

What trauma and survival strategies persist from these damaging experiences? How are Métis communities and families affected by intergenerational trauma? What might trauma-informed teaching look like?
