Métis Memories of Residential Schools — A Testament to the Strength of the Métis

We Must Stay Together!

Tile #22 We Must Stay Together!

Teaching Statement:

Indigenous children were gathered up by local officials, often accompanied by police, and sent hundreds of kilometres away from their homes in many cases. Siblings staying at the same school were forbidden from speaking or otherwise engaging with one another. Genders were separated and not allowed to interact.

Reflective Questions:

How does displacement from traditional homes and families disrupt relationships among siblings and parents?
