David Andre Boisvert, 1949 – 2016

David was born November 5, 1949 near Somerset Manitoba. Predeceased by parents Albert and Denise (Labossiere), David also leaves to mourn four younger brothers Richard (Dorothy), Phillipe, Robert and Edgar, sisters-in law Lorette (Tony) George, Veronica LaJambe, Theresa LaJambe and brother-in-law Derek (Heather) LaJambe.

Partnership to Deliver Temporary Services for Ft. McMurray Evacuees

The Rupertsland Institute and Service Canada are working together to host services for those who are affected by the Ft. McMurray fire.  This includes assistance for those who are eligible for Employment Insurance through on-line applications which are fast-tracked for review and approval.

Until further notice, Service Canada staff will be working out of RLI Métis Training to Employment sites in Lac La Biche and Edmonton to provide services for those who are impacted on Canada Pension Plan, Old Age Pension and Canada Passport services.

Historic Meeting of Rupertsland Institute, Employment & Social Development Canada & Service Canada

The Rupertsland Institute (RLI) and representatives of Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) and Service Canada (SC) held a highly productive meeting on Thursday, April 21st that included dialogue on a broad number of issues ranging from how the ongoing economic downturn has affected Métis people, to an analysis of the federal Aboriginal Skills Enhancement and Training Strategy (ASETS).  RLI officials articulated expectations about the upcoming ASETS renewal process and presented recommendations for the next round of the Aboriginal Labour Market Development program.

Rupertsland Institute CEO Lorne Gladu along with Audrey Poitras President of the Metis Nation of Alberta joined MacEwan University’s Dean of the School of Business Elsie Elford, Executive Director,  Amelia Canto Ellis, and Joanne Lieu, Senior Development Officer on March 22, 2016 for the unveiling of the Rupertsland Reading Room. The Rupertsland Reading Room is set within MacEwan University’s library.

Métis Nation of Alberta Supports Education Initiatives at Symposium

Métis Nation of Alberta President (MNA), Audrey Poitras and Métis Nation of Ontario President (MNO), Gary Lipinksi were present at the College of Alberta School Superintendents (CASS) First Nations, Métis and Inuit (FNMI) Education Symposium, which kicked off last night in Edmonton. The symposium runs until Friday and will bring together industry experts in education for discussions surrounding the state of FNMI education. Wednesday night keynote speakers included Ms. Heather Sweet, MLA for Edmonton-Manning; Gary Lipinski, MNO President and Chief Tony Alexis, Grand Chief, Confederacy of Treaty No. 6. MNA President Audrey Poitras stated that “the Métis Nation of Alberta’s educational institution, Rupertsland Institute, is very pleased to be part of this significant event that addresses education opportunities for Métis students. It is important that we work together with the community to close the education achievement gap between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students.”

Former recipients of Rupertsland Institute and the Métis Nation of Alberta Labour Market Development program gathered in Edmonton, Alberta during the MNA Annual General Assembly to celebrate their shared accomplishments. Rupertsland Institute also used the event to announce its intentions to create a formal alumni association.

MEF Endowments at Northern Lakes College

Northern Lakes College and the Métis Education Foundation celebrated the creation of a $200,000 Special Purpose Fund for Métis students attending Northern Lakes College. The gift from the Métis Education Foundation along with a contribution from Northern Lakes College will allow the fund to distribute awards and bursaries over a 15 year period to Métis students. Beginning in 2015-2016, over $12,000 will be distributed to Métis students to encourage post- secondary achievements and to provide financial assistance to Métis students in greatest financial need.

ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

On September 19, 2014, Rupertsland Institute staff participated in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge as nominated by former staff member Wayne Morin. Together, Rupertsland Institute staff raised over $1097 for ALS Canada and nominated Audrey Poitras, president of the Métis Nation of Alberta.

Press Release – Government of Canada Invests in Research on Labour Market Issues

The Honourable Greg Rickford, Minister of State for Science and Technology, and Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario, today announced investments in research that will help expand our understanding of labour market issues in Canada. The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) has awarded 16 Knowledge Synthesis Grants to researchers at postsecondary institutions across Canada. The goal of the grants is to combine or “synthesize” new and existing academic knowledge, and to make that information accessible to a broader audience.

Lethbridge College Métis Education Foundation Annoucement

May 15, 2013 – Lethbridge College announced a $500,000 gift today from the Métis Education Foundation. The gift will be directed to fund Métis Student Awards at Lethbridge College, ensuring over $20,000 to be awarded annually through awards of $3,500 each and will start in the 2013-14 school year.

Rupertsland Institute Completes Alberta Métis Community Engagement Sessions

Rupertsland Institute - Métis Centre of Excellence hosted a series of community engagement sessions across Alberta to gather information on how it can better serve Métis citizens. The sessions, which took place between October and December of 2012 were held in eleven communities, and attracted participation from over 180 community members.

Métis students studying at the University of Calgary can now access $60,000 in new scholarship opportunities annually, thanks to the Métis Education Foundation and their establishment of a $750,000 endowment.

Rupertsland Institute Signs Partnership with Alberta Health Services

May 7, 2012 – A partnership between Alberta Health Services (AHS) and Rupertsland Institute, Métis Centre of Excellence, will create new training and employment opportunities for Métis students studying a health-related field.
The agreement was signed today by Dr. Chris Eagle, President and CEO and Alberta Health Services, and Tracy Friedel, Chair of the Rupertsland Institute Board of Directors.

Press Release - Métis Nation of Alberta Appoints new Chair for the Rupertsland Institute

The Métis Nation of Alberta (MNA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Tracy L. Friedel as the Chair of the Rupertsland Institute Board of Governors.  Dr. Friedel was appointed on February 8, 2012 by the MNA Provincial Council and will serve a five-year term effective immediately.  She assumes the position from Interim Chair, Dr. Herb Belcourt who acted in this position for the past six months.  Dr. Belcourt will resume his duties as the Vice-Chair of Rupertsland Institute (RLI).
